Texture and Play 20th May

Texture and Play 20th May

Tonight at Great Ayton Art Club we worked with acrylic paint to create atmospheric sand dune landscapes using a limited colour palette.

By keeping the colours simple, everyone could really focus on tone, texture, and layering the painting gradually. Towards the end of the session we introduced palette knives, using thick, bold marks to begin building texture and depth across the dunes and grasses.

This unexpectedly turned into a two-part session because we became so absorbed in the process that we didn’t quite get everything finished. We still have texture medium to add next week, which will allow us to build even thicker paint and create even more dramatic surfaces.

As always, a few people seemed to get the hang of it straight away, but the best part was seeing everyone give themselves permission to play, experiment, and enjoy the process without worrying too much about perfection.
