Parent and Child Sunset Painting in Swainby
LIndsey GrovesWe created some beautiful sunset paintings at our latest Parent and Child Art Workshop at Swainby Village Hall, and there was such a brilliant atmosphere in the room. It was especially lovely to welcome back some familiar faces from our previous art workshops in Swainby.
We began by using acrylic paint to create a smooth sunset gradient, blending from bright yellow through orange and finally into a rich magenta. Keeping the colour palette limited gave everyone a simple structure to work within while still leaving plenty of room to experiment and make the painting their own.
While our backgrounds were drying, we became designers. Everyone chose the silhouettes they wanted to use, tracing and arranging the different elements before transferring their final compositions onto their canvas boards. We then carefully painted the silhouettes in black, creating a striking contrast against the colourful backgrounds.
It was wonderful to see adults and children creating alongside one another and becoming completely absorbed in the process. Although everyone followed the same basic steps, the finished paintings were all so different.
That's one of my favourite things about running family and children's art workshops in North Yorkshire. It's not about everyone producing the same picture. It's about learning a few simple techniques, making your own creative decisions and coming away with something you're proud of.
Another lovely Swainby art workshop, and such a fantastic collection of colourful sunset paintings to take home.
