Learning to See Differently. Watercolour and Mixed Media Illustration

LIndsey Groves

This Wednesday at Great Ayton Art Club, we explored a lovely combination of watercolour, watercolour pencils and acrylic markers to create colourful, expressive illustrations.

Working from holiday snaps and local scenes that members had brought along, we began by laying down large areas of watercolour. While the paint was still wet, we introduced watercolour pencils, allowing the marks and colours to blend and create interesting textures. Finally, we used acrylic markers to add definition, highlights and those finishing details that really bring an illustration together.

The main focus of the session was learning how to translate what we see onto paper. What do we include? What can we leave out? And what could we adapt to create an interesting but still recognisable illustration?

It's a skill we return to regularly in our adult art classes in Great Ayton. Learning to simplify a busy scene and make confident creative decisions is far more valuable than trying to copy every detail of a reference image.

A special mention goes to our newest member, who completed a beautiful illustration of her gorgeous horses, Gretel and Lucy. The combination of loose watercolour washes and delicate lines over the top created a lovely, personal tribute to two horses so close to her heart. It was a wonderful example of how illustration can capture something meaningful without needing to reproduce every tiny detail.

The finished illustrations were fantastic, each with its own character and interpretation. It's lovely to see everyone developing their own approach and discovering how combining different materials can open up so many creative possibilities.

Another brilliant evening of experimenting, learning and building confidence at Great Ayton Art Club in North Yorkshire.
