Leaning Into Ink at Great Ayton 22.7.06

Tonight at Great Ayton Art Club we explored the wonderfully vibrant world of coloured inks, creating bright, expressive studies of fruit and vegetables before adding detail with acrylic markers.

Ink is one of those materials that has a mind of its own. It flows, spreads and blends in ways you can't always predict, so rather than trying to control every mark, we talked about leaning into what the material naturally wants to do. Sometimes the most interesting effects happen when you allow the ink to surprise you.

We also discovered how much more control you can have by working on dry paper. Colours can be placed more deliberately, while still softening and blending beautifully where they meet. Watching the vibrant inks merge into one another created rich, glowing colours that really brought the subjects to life.

Once the ink had dried, we introduced acrylic markers to define edges, add highlights and create areas of contrast and detail. The opaque paint sat beautifully over the transparent ink, helping certain features stand out and giving each illustration even more character.

It was another lovely evening of experimentation and creative play. Every piece looked completely different, despite everyone working from similar references, and it was wonderful to see people becoming more confident in trusting the materials, making bold decisions and enjoying the unexpected along the way.
