Giving Yourself Permission to Play (24th June '26)

Last night we continued our sketchbook experimentation, and it was brilliant to see everyone trying different ways of using the materials.

This week I didn't do a demonstration. Instead, I wanted everyone to trust their instincts, experiment, and simply have a go. It's amazing what happens when you give people permission to play rather than worrying about getting it "right".

As adults, we're so used to rules, structure and being told what to do that it can feel strange making your own creative decisions. But that's exactly what the last few sessions have been about. Sketchbooks aren't meant to be full of perfect drawings. They're a place to experiment, explore ideas, and discover what works for you. Some pages will be successful, some won't, but every one of them teaches you something.

The more you experiment, the more confident you become, and the more enjoyable the creative process is.

Next week, I'll be demonstrating how I transfer a sketch onto watercolour paper, decide what to leave out and what to emphasise, and use watercolour to guide the viewer's eye around the painting.

I can't wait to see how everyone's work develops.
