Finding Light & Tone at Swainby 30th June '26

It was lovely to see everyone relax into today’s chalk workshop and really enjoy the process.

By working with just white chalk on black paper, everyone was given a simple set of creative constraints. Rather than thinking about colour, the focus became understanding tone and learning how to create the right range of greys.

Throughout the session, we looked carefully at the shapes within the reference image, deciding whether one area gently faded into another or whether there was a clear, defined edge between the tones. This way of observing encourages you to really look, rather than simply draw what you think you can see.

It was wonderful to watch everyone’s confidence grow as the session progressed. With fewer decisions to make, people were able to slow down, experiment, and appreciate how much can be achieved with just one stick of chalk and a piece of black paper.

The results can be really striking.
