Confidence Through Illustration
LIndsey GrovesLast night at Great Ayton Art Club we continued exploring fineliners and simple watercolour washes to create an illustrated scene of the walkway bridge over the river in Great Ayton.
As always, the focus wasn't on copying the reference image exactly, but on deciding what to include, what to simplify, and where a little artistic licence could make the composition stronger. Using loose pen work alongside gentle washes and dabs of watercolour created sketches full of character and atmosphere.
It was particularly lovely to see everyone's confidence continuing to grow. As the sessions progress, people are becoming much better at recognising what isn't quite working and, more importantly, understanding how to resolve it. Sometimes that meant simplifying an awkward shape, adjusting a line, or simply leaving something out altogether.
One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is watching people move away from worrying about getting everything perfect and instead making confident creative decisions of their own. Last night's sketches were all wonderfully individual, and each one captured the spirit of the scene in its own unique way.
